Vitamin B12

Similar to the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil, vitamin and mineral deficiencies have been linked to the development of ADHD and a number of other, similar disorders. Vitamin B12 specifically has been shown to impact mood and the development of the central nervous system, with deficiencies leading to a number of psychiatric problems, including behavioral issues and disorders such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, depression, and of course, ADHD. Such deficiencies are typically caused by malabsorption (where the body has difficulty extracting the vitamin from food) or insufficient intake of the vitamin. Both of these can be addressed by adding vitamin B12 supplements to the diet.

Scientific Studies:

A 2015 study investigated vitamin B12 levels in children with ADHD. At the conclusion of their research, they recommended that children with the disorder take B12 and amino acid supplements. A year later, another group of researchers examined vitamin deficiencies in children with ADHD and those with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) and found significant differences in vitamin B12 and vitamin D levels between the two groups and a third group without either kind of disorder.
