Going Vegan

A vegan diet is one that includes no forms of meat or other animal-related products, such as dairy and honey. While many people choose a vegan diet for ethical or environmental reasons, it can also be a great choice for those who are looking to lose weight. Studies have shown that vegans tend to have lower BMIs than the average person, and, if followed properly, a vegan diet can lower blood sugar and cholesterol and help prevent certain diseases.

Vegan diets convey several benefits. First, they are high in fiber, which reduces hunger and increases feelings of fullness, helping to cut down on cravings and overeating. They are also less calorie-dense and richer in vitamins and nutrients than the average diet, and can help limit the intake of unhealthy foods.

It should be noted that there is more to a healthy vegan diet than just staying away from animal products. In most diets, animal-related foods are the body's primary sources of protein, vitamin D, and other nutrients, and substitutes will need to be found. Additionally, just because something is vegan-friendly doesn't mean that it is healthy, so you will still need to keep an eye on what you're eating. There are also genetic factors that can interact badly with a vegan diet, so be sure to consult your doctor first.

Going vegan is an increasingly popular diet choice, and more and more vegan-friendly foods and options are hitting the market each year, making this a great time to give this diet a try!

Scientific Studies:

A 2007 study compared the effectiveness of low-fat vegan diet to National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) diet in terms of maintenance of weight loss. 62 overweight women had been previously assigned to one of the two diets and then participated in a 14-week study. Half of the participants were offered no support, and half were offered a full year of support following the end of the experiment. Weight and the degree to which participants adhered to the diets were measured at 1 and 2 years post-trial. At both milestones, vegans had lost more weight and kept it off more effectively than those on the NECP diet, and support also provided significant benefits for both groups.
